JIT and the Balanced Scorecard: linking manufacturing control to management control
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers can improve their effectiveness by linking just-in-time (JIT) philosophy with the concept of the Balanced Scorecard. The JIT environment can be improved through this approach because the Balanced Scorecard looks at the historical as well as the current and future operations of a company, measures value creation, and identifies factors critical to organizational success. Moreover, it not only measures but also communicates, offers feedback, facilitates learning and keeps strategic objectives aligned with day-to-day operational control. JIT metrics that may be assessed through the Balanced Scorecard are in the areas of process, workforce and supplier relationships, although other variables may also be examined, depending on the unique circumstances of the manufacturer. Management accountants should consider the benefits of the Balanced Scorecard in their management control activities.
