James Marshall illustrated his children's books, and his ability to make the illustrations look easy and simple for children is almost a lost art. The composition of his illustrations showed his talent and depth as an artist. His drawings of hippos for his George and Martha books exemplify this.

Barthelme died in 1989 at the age of 58 but a posthumous collections of about 50 stories will be released in 1998. Many people do not know his work, but his fictions and essays are well written, with ideas often far in advance of other writers. His literary forte was to mix things in a collage.

James Dickey's life compares to those of other great American writers like Hemingway, Faulkner and Robert Frost in a sense that he lived a sad life. Dickey's works, especially his volume of poems with which he won the National Book Awards, are as imposing as his physical built.
