Intel is upheld on copyright for 486 chip: Advanced Micro is barred from selling clones that copy software
Article Abstract:
Federal Judge William Ingram rules that Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) does not have the right to copy microcode software that Intel Corp uses in its 80486 microprocessors. The ruling means that Intel will continue to enjoy a virtual monopoly on the best-selling 486 chips until a competitor can come up with a different microcode. AMD had planned to introduce a 486 clone using Intel microcode as early as late Dec 1992. The company is developing a second version of the chip with microcode that will not infringe on Intel's copyright, but that version will not be ready to ship before mid-1993. The ruling does not affect AMD's clone of Intel's 386 microprocessor.

Advanced Micro set back in suit against Intel
Article Abstract:
A federal judge has ruled against Advanced Micro Devices Corp in a major part of Advanced Micro's antitrust lawsuit against Intel Corp. Advanced Micro charges that Intel uses unfair practices to dominate the market for microprocessors. Specifically, Advanced Micro charges that Intel tried to illegally destroy a 1982 agreement between the companies. Advanced Micro says the agreement was supposed to give Advanced Micro the right to manufacture Intel's 80386 chips. Judge James Ware has ruled against Advanced Micro, noting that there is a statute of limitations of four years that applies in such cases. Advanced Micro, says Judge Ware, waited too long.
