LSI to unveil chip design for building inexpensive machines to access Internet
Article Abstract:
LSI Logic Corp introduces microchip technology that integrates many functions on a single chip and will allow the creation of relatively low-cost Internet access boxes. LSI's chip integrates a Silicon Graphics' microprocessor with electronic systems for digital signal processing, video and audio transmission, high-speed communications modems and 3-D graphics. Combining this chip with a memory chip will provide the basis for an Internet device that uses a television for its display. Other features, such as a PC monitor, more memory, a CD-ROM, a hard drive or a faster modem, could also be added. LSI's technology relies on Sun Microsystems' Java software, which allows users to store files on a server offered by an Internet access provider. The success of the technology will depend on faster transmission lines and modems to support the transmission of video and animation. Commercial shipments of these Internet boxes are expected by fall 1996.

Internet users spooked about spies' new role
Article Abstract:
The Web Review, an Internet newsletter, debates whether the acquisition of Network Solutions, the company that assigns Internet domain names, by defense contractor Science Applications International Corp (SAIC) indicates government involvement in Internet activities. There is no evidence that SAIC has influenced Network Solutions' management of the domain registry, but Internet users express concern about any government involvement. Individuals can currently register any unused domain name merely by contacting Network Solutions, but awarding names can involve economic stakes. If the Internet becomes an integral aspect of the national and international economy, domain names are likely to become very valuable. The National Science Foundation and Internet users hope to develop a long-term solution to the problems of awarding names by 1998 when Network Solutions contract expires.

In the net; take the Internet, add groupware software, and what do you get? Employees, customers and suppliers interacting in a way never before possible
Article Abstract:
Companies are increasingly employing intranets to connect their operations and provide links to their customers and suppliers. Intranets are internal networks that employ the Internet to connect with external operations and users. These companies are also using groupware applications to enable employees in separate locations to collaborate on projects and documents. The intranets enable workers, suppliers and customers to interact in ways that were previously impossible. Banc One Corp is employing groupware that links Lotus Notes to the Internet and reduces the amount of paperwork involved in transaction processing. Countrywide Credit Industries is employing the Internet to link mortgage brokers with its internal databases. Mobil Corp is using an Internet link to enable its gas stations and other merchants to check on the availability of products and to process orders.
