Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating defended his economic policies in a televised debate with his major opponent John Howard on Feb 11, 1996. Keating also detailed his plan to catch tax evaders. Howard outlined his ideas on health care reform. The results of a Feb 13, 1996 poll are given.

Keating announces republic plan
Article Abstract:
Keating, on Jun 7, 1995, submitted details of a plan to hold a national referendum on conversion from British constitutional monarchy to a federal republic. The referendum would be held in 1998 or 1999. Some critics of the plan objected to the way the president would be selected.
