Leaders in videophone technology are two classic start-up companies

PictureTel Corp and Compression Labs Inc are both start-up companies that began small and have developed into two major video telephone technology companies. PictureTel was started by two MIT graduates, while Compression Labs was started by an immigrant engineer from Taiwan. Compression Labs introduced a device for the compression, sending and receiving of video conferences over high-capacity telephone lines in 1982. PictureTel began as PicTel in 1984 after finding a chief executive and managed to raise $4.4 million in an initial public offering. A prototype product was introduced ten months later, but the company encountered financial trouble in the late 1980s. PictureTel is now worth about $700 million and Compression Labs is valued at $240 million. Larger companies like AT&T rely on the technology developed by these two smaller companies. PictureTel has targeted the videoconference market while Compression Labs provides compression technology.

Boston Technology to post $600,000 4th-quarter net

Boston Technology Inc completes the year ending Jan 31, 1990 with its fourth consecutive quarter of profitable operations. The company expects 4th qtr 1989 profits of $600,000 on $8.8 million compared with a net loss of $496,000 for the same period one year ago. For the fiscal year the company reports a profit of $1.9 million on revenue of $25 million. In 1988, the company reported a loss of $1.4 million on revenue of only $2.4 million. Boston Technology makes voice processing products for telephone companies; the machines range in price from $100,000 to $3 million. Bell Atlantic is its largest customer, accounting for more than half its sales, but the firm is beginning to reach other telecommunications companies including new clients BellSouth, Southwestern Bell and NYNEX Corp's cellular unit. Analysts expect the company's revenue to rise in each succeeding quarter of 1990.

Net at Technical Communications gained in quarter

Technical Communications Corp, which makes secure telephones and communications equipment, will report that net income for 4th qtr 1991 ended Sep 30 was up by about 12 percent. Sales in the period were flat. Net income for 4th qtr 1990 was $1 million, or 84 cents a share, on sales of $5.2 million. According to Chmn and CEO Arnold M. McCalmont, the company's net income for the year was up about 10 percent, and sales were up by about the same amount. Technical Communications finds customers worldwide for its telephones, which have a capability to scramble and unscramble voice or data communications. The US General Services Administration recommends Technical's systems as suited to the government's needs for the government's evolving FTS 2000 communications network.
