Learning Co. agrees to buy Broderbund
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Broderbund Software Inc., maker of the popular Carmen Sandiego series and Myst, by the Learning Co. in a stock deal of about $416 million is the 14th acquisition by Learning since 1994. The deal is expected to raise Learning, with sales this year of about $575 million, to the top position in a $500 million educational software retail market by giving it at least a 40% market share. Learning also will be in a strong position in the market for productivity programs, such as custom greeting-card and encylcopedia software. The deal, which will lift the company's revenue to about $1 billion, will create tighter competition between Learning, with about 37% of the educational software market, and rivals Cendant Corp., with about 30% market share, and Microsoft.
