Intel keeps rolling up strong results even as chip industry sits in a slump
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp is maintaining large profit margins despite a general slump in the semiconductor industry. Intel will post 1st qtr earnings as much as 25 percent higher than were announced in the year-earlier period. Net income will be roughly $130 million, or 65 cents per share, compared to 1st qtr 1989's $97 million, or 52 cents a share. Revenue is expected to be around $900 million for the quarter. Intel attributes its healthy report to strong sales of its latest generation of microprocessors. Demand is high for the 80386 chip and shipment of the much-sought-after 80486 chip will begin during the 2nd qtr. Analysts expect sales of the 486 will eventually top 900,000 per year. The same analysts are predicting that Intel can generate revenue of close to $1 billion during the 2nd qtr 1990.
