Let's share; corporate departments can now see the databases of other departments--and it's giving them a whole new perspective on the business
Article Abstract:
Data warehousing and data mining technologies have created a new industry that helps companies employ technology to identify new ways to utilize data already stored in their databases. Older database systems cannot exchange information or provide a picture of a company's overall operations. Data mining overcomes these limitations. Data warehousing systems typically employ a mainframe for storing data and special software that sorts and analyzes the information. The world's largest data warehouse is a 7TB system belonging to WalMart Stores Inc. The company claims the system enables it to manage a huge operation that would otherwise be beyond the range of human capabilities. The Bank of America's 1.2TB data warehouse is used daily by 1,500 users who make 2,800 queries per day. Marriott International uses data mining to identify potential buyers for its time-share properties.

Java is finding niches but isn't living up to its early promises
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems' Java programming language has yet to meet expectations as a significant alternative to Microsoft's Windows OS. Java, which Sun introduced in 1995 to energize World Wide Web sites, is used by less than 1% of all Web pages. Sun says Java usage extends to up to 400,000 programmers, but more programmers are complaining that performance troubles are undermining Java's biggest promise of program interoperability. Some technology observers believe Java will alter the computer industry and electronic commerce. Some Web sites, citing inefficiency, are eliminating their Java applications. Companies are reducing their Java plans, because Java lacks the speed and features of Windows- or Macintosh-specific counterparts. Java has maintained credibility as a coding advancement because of its network friendliness and ability to correct C++ language problems.

Stiffer competition looms for networking companies; Intel, Microsoft join other in seeking foothold in lucrative industry
Article Abstract:
Microsoft, Intel and Compaq have begun to move into the very lucrative $36 billion networking industry. They will be developing hardware and software that in the past only networking specialists were able to provide. This will result in a further blurring of the lines between the computer and network worlds, as stiffer competition produces lower profit margins for all companies. Compaq has purchased Microcom, a networking equiment maker, for $280 million. Sun Microsystems is planning to sell hardware equipped with Gigabit Ethernet, which it will buy from Alteon Networks. Intel has introduced inexpensive hardware that allows PCs to communicate with networks at extremely high speeds. Network suppliers are confidant that the complexity of their field will prevent computer companies from making many inroads.
