Line of Recognition Equipment marks shift in strategy

Recognition Equipment Inc will introduce products that target the computer imaging market. This represents a shift in strategy, following a series of quarterly losses and lawsuits. Recognition Equipment intends to divest itself of some operations and to focus attention on imaging systems that facilitate the automation of handling paperwork. New products, expected in fall 1990, will be of three kinds: one kind will allow users to create and modify their own image processing systems without requiring sophisticated knowledge; the second kind will enable users to enter images and data from documents into the system; and the third kind will involve workstation products that enable users to program the system to manage specific work applications. A company spokesman says Recognition Equipment will focus marketing attention on government agencies and transportation, insurance and financial services companies.

Tandy to open huge Oregon store for electronics
Article Abstract:
Tandy Corp plans a 160,000-square-foot consumer electronics store near Portland, OR. The store, which is being built in Wilsonville, a Portland suburb, will sell name-brand microcomputers, consumer electronics products and home appliances. The project is titled Project Thunder. Tandy's Radio Shack stores have not been doing well, and Tandy has been moving into various alternative retail formats, but the Oregon store is much larger and potentially more risky than anything else the company has tried until now. Such a large store will have to draw many customers, which means prices will have to be low and margins will be narrow. Even so, at least one industry observer believes that Tandy can afford to take this risk because Tandy itself is such a large company.
