Lot sizing to reduce capacity utilization in a production process with defective items, process corrections, and rework
Article Abstract:
Imperfections in manufacturing operations can result in defective products, thereby increasing costs for manufacturers. The lot sizing problem motivated by the wafer probe operation in semiconductor manufacturing and involving several major imperfections is considered. The production process imperfections examined were process shifting to out-of-control states, the diagnosis these out-of-control shifts, corrective actions for identified shifts, and the fixed and variable processing times for reworking defective items. The key motivation for resolving the lot sizing problem in this particular manufacturing environment was to lessen overall processing time involving a vital resource. Results of the analysis are discussed.

Production lot sizing with machine breakdowns
Article Abstract:
Equipment breakdowns can seriously disrupt a manufacturing operation that uses just-in-time procedures. The impact of these machine breakdowns must be considered when making resource allocation decisions to ensure that corrective maintenance efforts enable the maximization of production efficiency. Two production control policies are examined to illustrate how appropriate economic lot sizing decisions can be determined when equipment repair times are significant.
