Lotto's losing streak

60 to 80% of Australians buy a lottery ticket each year. The revenue generated by this industry, which has both private and state government companies, is however dwindling with increase in competition. Cost control measures are now becoming the main contributors to the bottom line which are no longer able to measure up to their previous glory due to slowdown in growth.

IBM has chosen Brisbane in Queensland over Bangalore for an important Asia-Pacific outsourcing support centre. This is likely to translate into 1000 jobs in the region during the next 10 years. Other outsourcing projects heading towards Australia are also discussed.

The first half of 2001 has seen only 38 initial public offerings on the Australian stockmarket as opposed to 162 during 2000. The lack of flotations is due to increased standards and a slower economy.
