Lotus's position; software firm hopes to take 'Notes' places Microsoft can't follow; but competition is looming - and program's edge may last only months; putting GM bolts on-line
Article Abstract:
Software vendor Lotus is trying to retain market share for its Lotus Notes workgroup software as industry leader Microsoft readies similar offerings. The Microsoft programs will not ship until sometime in 1996, but Lotus has seen Microsoft crush other rivals in the highly competitive software industry. Hoping that it will not become another victim, Lotus is concentrating on its E-mail and workgroup programs. In the 4th qtr of 1994, sales of Lotus' E-mail and Notes applications doubled to $134 million and surpassed the company's flagship Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet for the first time. Moreover, the roster of Notes users is impressive and continually expanding. General Motors plans to install approximately 45,000 copies of Notes to digitally connect GM managers and executives throughout the US. A joint development venture between Lotus and AT&T will make Notes available over telephone lines.

Microsoft case: tapes, E-mail and meetings
Article Abstract:
Evidence gathered from the Justice Department's antitrust suit against Microsoft indicates the legal strategy of both sides when the case begins Oct 15, 1998. An example is Apple's account to the Justice Department of a Feb 1998 meeting between Microsoft executive Don Bradford and Apple chief technologist Avi Tevanian. Bradford allegedly told Tevanian that Microsoft Chmn Bill Gates said Microsoft would aid Apple in the video-software tool market in exchange for withholding its QuickTime multimedia software from the Windows software market. The other key issue probably will center on Microsoft's allegedly illegal effort to divide the Internet software market with rival Netscape. Much of the trail's evidence remains under court seal, however.
