'Melissa' shows it's harder to hide in cyberspace
Article Abstract:
The quick arrest of the 'Melissa' virus author, David L. Smith, is indicative of the strides made by security agencies, anti-virus software developers and telecommunications and online services in tracing the sources of computer viruses and prosecuting their authors. Smith was noticed by investigators before he ever released the virus due to his participation in online discussion groups concerning them. These groups are often a forum for exchange of virus code. Investigators are still looking for other virus authors believed to have participated in Melissa's creation and distribution. Since his capture, many newsgroups and websites devoted to viruses have shut down as their participants try to lower their profiles and escape the notice of law enforcement. Smith was traced using tags contained in the virus postings that matched tags in documents he posted to Web sites and discussion groups. Online access was traced through an account he allegedly accessed illegally that was traced to his phone number.

Intel wins delay for trial with FTC until January 5
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will go to court on January 5, 1998 following an administrative judge's decision to grant the company more time to prepare for its defense. Intel has been charged with antitrust violations. The FTC has called for the trial to begin December 7, 1998. The FTC believes that Intel exploited its monopoly power by retaliating against customers and rivals. The company is believed to have retaliated by witholding technology data that is required to make other products.
