Mergers and acquisitions and your career options
Article Abstract:
Accountants should take proactive measures in preparation for an impending merger or acquisition. When faced with the possibility of such a union, professionals working in a corporate accounting department should discuss their concerns with their managers as calmly as possible. They should decide if they want to stay put in their current job or look for a better employment opportunity elsewhere. If they want to retain their existing job, they should maintain an optimistic attitude, eschew rumor-mongering, adopt a strong work ethic, prepare for new responsibilities and communicate with their supervisors. Should they opt for a new job in other organizations, accountants should look in classified ads and the Internet, retain a recruiter, hone their interview skills and avoid cutting off current relationships with supervisors and co-workers.

A career development model for management accountants
Article Abstract:
Managerial accountants do not have a mapped out model of career development as do public accountants. A conceptual model of the career development of a managerial accountant will include five steps: college education, professional certification at the entry level, specialization at the supervisory level, the gaining of managerial expertise ant the management level, and the acquisition of organizational and strategic skills at the executive level. The National Association of Accountants has developed a framework for a career-oriented continuing education program that will foster the professional development of managerial accountants. The framework covers economics and finance, financial accounting and reporting and taxation, management reporting and analysis and control issues, and continuing education.

Conducting a career audit
Article Abstract:
Managerial accountants that have reached what the feel is a plateau in their career should conduct a career audit. Managerial accountants that have reached a career plateau should not blame their company for their situation, but should look at any weaknesses in themselves that have led to a lack of career momentum. A career audit entails an examination of the managerial accountant's knowledge base, including computer literacy, management of people, and post-graduate education.
