Micron to quit Sematech Group, cites differences
Article Abstract:
Micron Technology Inc, a computer chip manufacturer located in Boise, ID, is the second company to announce its withdrawal from the Sematech consortium. Sematech, more formally known as the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Institute, is an alliance of 11 companies, not counting Micron, formed in 1987 to strengthen the US semiconductor industry's position against Japanese competition. Micron's executives indicate that they believe the company receives an inadequate return on its investment in Sematech, and they disagree with the direction the group is moving. LSI Logic Corp is also leaving Sematech for similar reasons plus internal fiscal considerations. Two other companies are considering withdrawal after the specified two-year waiting period, but several major firms such as Texas Instruments Inc remain committed to the consortium.

Advanced Micro, Hewlett plan collaboration
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co and Advanced Micro Devices Inc have reached an agreement on co-developing a new process for manufacturing semiconductors that will shrink the space between transistors on a computer chip by half. The result would be a greater number of transistors that can be fitted on a computer chip and faster chip performance. Advanced Micro Devices plans to use the new technology in 1995 to compete against Intel Corp's code-named P-6 microprocessor, scheduled to ship in 1994. Currently, circuits are made 0.7 microns apart; the new process would enable the building of circuits that are 0.35 microns apart. Advanced Micro Devices, under increasing pressure from archrival Intel, plans to spend $900 on research and development in 1993, up from $800 million in 1992.

LSI withdraws from Sematech research group
Article Abstract:
LSI Logic Corp, Milpitas, CA, withdraws from Sematech (Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Institute), which is the research consortium established in 1987 to strengthen the US semiconductor industry relative to the Japanese semiconductor industry. LSI says it disagrees with Sematech's policies. Specifically, LSI does not agree that Sematech should fund companies that make semiconductor-device manufacturing equipment. LSI adds that it is re-evaluating how it spends its money and the company believes its research and development dollars would be better spent elsewhere than in Sematech. Both LSI and Sematech agree that LSI's break with Sematech does not indicate that the consortium is in trouble.
