Microsoft invests $200 million in Qwest
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp. has committed to a $200 million investment in Qwest Communications' stock that will provide a service to businesses using MS software for e-mail or the Internet, electronic commerce or a remote network. The service will allow the two firms to collect a fee based on usage. It approaches the "Windows dial tone" that Bill Gates has envisioned and that would provide a more regular revenue source, easier than having to re-sell software upgrades. The deal makes the Denver-based Qwest more than just a phone line service. How the two firms will split the fees was not disclosed.

Baby Bell combinations may face stiff conditions
Article Abstract:
The Federal Communications Commission may use it's approval of two pending merger rulings to hasten the pace of market opening by local telecommunications providers. SBC Communications Inc. proposes buying Ameritech Corp. for $56 bil. Bell Atlantic Corp. wants to acquire GTE Corp. for $52 bil. Regulators point to deals they approved before, such as Ameritech's merger with Nynex, where competitors claim that network access for them is proceeding slowly. In these two cases, the FCC may want to see evidence of progress in one or two states, before approving the mergers.
