Microsoft manages to post record quarterly earnings
Article Abstract:
Microsoft reported record earnings for its 3rd qtr FY 1994 ending Mar 31, 1995, on stronger than expected sales in the OEM channel and in the Far East. Microsoft reported that its earnings for the 3rd qtr rose a record 55% to $396 million, or 63 cents per share from the same period last year. The company had warned analysts not to expect strong earnings for the 3rd qtr because it does not currently have any new applications in the retail market. Analysts also noted that Microsoft Office had passed its peak in the sales cycle, and that many companies were not purchasing new applications because they were waiting for Microsoft Windows 95 to be introduced. The record earnings were the result of strong sales of pre-installed applications in PCs in the OEM channel, which also had excellent sales during the period. Microsoft also experienced strong sales in the Far East.

Microsoft's earnings top Wall St. expectations
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's 4th qtr 1996 earnings were up 29% to $741 million from $575 million in 1995. Revenue was also up 22% to $2.68 billion in 1996, from $2.20 billion in 1995. Earnings averaged 57 cents per share, exceeding analysts' expectations of 50 cents per share. Microsoft officials offered cautionary announcements however, noting that the maturing business meant lower growth rates. Microsoft revenue has been on a downward growth trend from a high of 46% in 1995. Growth in research and development costs has outpaced growth in revenue. Microsoft's desktop applications area, a core business, has been growing at less than 10%, and slower computer sales will hurt the desktop operating system market. However, sales of Windows NT and Microsoft SQL Server doubled in 1996, and Microsoft officials expect market share to exceed 40% by the end of 1997.

Higher results are reported by Microsoft; earnings again top analysts' estimates
Article Abstract:
Microsoft beat analysts' expectations by earning $575 million in 2nd qtr FY 1996, a 54% increase over the $373 million earned in the same quarter in FY 1995. Revenues reached $2.20 billion, up 48% from the $1.48 billion reported in 2nd qtr FY 1995. For the first six months of FY 1996, Microsoft had earnings of $1.1 billion, in contrast to the $689 million earned in the first six months of FY 1995. The company reports particularly strong sales through OEMs, with OEM revenues reaching $672 million, a 75% increase over revenues from the same sector in 2nd qtr FY 1995. While sales of Windows 95 through OEMs were strong, retail sales of the operating system fell off, with revenues dropping from $260 million in 1st qtr FY 1996 to $180 million in 2nd qtr FY 1996, a decline that the company expected after the initial introduction.
