Microsoft outlines Internet strategy, which includes buying stake in Uunet

Microsoft Corp plans to purchase a minority stake in Internet-access provider Uunet Technologies Inc as part of its overall strategy to invade the Internet. Uunet, which was one of the first companies to provide Internet connections to businesses, currently provides Internet access for approximately 25 cities. The small company predicts that Microsoft's investment will enable it to expand its network to hundreds of cities. Microsoft hopes to attract more users to its Microsoft Network online information service, which is scheduled to begin around Aug 1995. Microsoft's investment in Uunet may create more competition for other online service providers, which are also trying to develop Internet capabilities. Microsoft has also licensed the Mosaic technology for browsing the World Wide Web (WWW), boosting the competition in the WWW browser market.

Retailers fear Microsoft Network will leave them out of the loop; dealer group seeks action by the U.S. to prevent direct on-line sales

The ASCII Group Inc, a purchasing group for 1,075 independent computer dealers will petition the Justice Dept to take action against the Microsoft Network, fearing Microsoft's proposed on-line service may put them out of business. The Microsoft Network is expected to commence operations in Aug, 1995, in tandem with the company's Windows 95 operating system. The ASCII Group believes the network will illegally pass over computer dealers, allowing vendors to sell their software and hardware products directly to consumers. The complaint is one of many the Justice Dept is reviewing in connection with Microsoft's purchase of Intuit Inc, the leading developer of personal-financial software. ASCII is asking the agency to begin a separate investigation of Microsoft, a trend that may become more common with the proliferation of electronic commerce.

Microsoft's Dec 7, 1995 revision of its Internet strategy concerning its Microsoft Network (MSN) online service disconcerts many of the 400 content providers that were induced to develop information services for MSN. Microsoft is reducing the marketing premium that it had assumed would be generated from proprietary forums conducted on MSN, leaving investors without an indication of how they can expect to regain their MSN-based investments. Content providers complain that Microsoft has failed to provide valuable demographic and MSN usage information, data that content providers need to effectively develop accurate marketing and pricing systems. Microsoft officials publicly commiserate with the effected content providers, but they deny that the company has violated any contractual agreements.
