Aiming for business readers this time, Gates plans 2d book
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Chmn William H. Gates plans to write a new book targeting the company's millions of business customers, according to industry insiders. Gates will attempt to portray himself as an innovator whose company revolutionized world business, as well as restore an image under attack from a Government antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft. Plans call for Gates to focus on close friend Steven Ballmer's business ideas. Ballmer is the company executive in charge of Microsoft's sales and business strategy. Gates targeted a general audience with his first book, 'The Road Ahead,' which Viking published in 1995. The book was a commercial success, but computer industry executives and other critics said it failed to break new ground. Microsoft said Gates has reached a verbal understanding with an undisclosed New York publishing house, and no timetable has been announced.

Harm found to the image of Microsoft: survey sees decline in brand reputation
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's brand reputation among business customers and consumers has declined because of its legal clash with the Justice Department, according to research organization Techtel. Only 70% of general business users held a positive opinion about Microsoft's brand name by the end of 1997, which represents a nearly 10% drop in 1997. Consumers held a 67% approval by the end of 1997, showing a 5% fall in the 4th qtr 1997. Negative opinion of Microsoft doubled to 8% in 1997 among consumers, while the number among business users jumped from 11.4% at the beginning of 1997 to 19.4% at the end of 1997. Techtel each quarter surveys a 900-member panel that represents a range of company sizes, business users and consumer households. Microsoft was sued by the Justice Department late in 1997 for alleged antitrust marketing practices of its Explorer Web-navigation software.
