Microsoft posts 64% profit rise for 1st quarter
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's 64 percent hike in its 1st qtr FY 1992 earnings disputes the common belief that the microcomputer industry is in a slump. The company surpassed analysts' forecasts by posting a net income of $144 million, or 75 cents per share, compared with the year-ago level of $87.6 million, or 47 cents per share. Revenue went up by 57 percent, at $580.5 million. Microsoft's notable financial performance is attributed to big gains in systems software and applications, particularly the new version of the MS-DOS operating system and the large number of Windows applications. Microsoft chmn William Gates III has predicted that the microcomputer market will grow by 10 percent in 1991, despite the upheavals among market leaders such as IBM and Compaq Computer Corp.

Software makers to post gains for the quarter: analysts predict Symantec will show best results
Article Abstract:
The computer software industry continues to do well compared with hardware. Results for software publishers the quarter ending Dec 31 are good. Symantec Inc is expected to do especially well, and so is Microsoft Corp. Novell's results will be good, partly because Novell acquired Digital Research Inc in 1991. Borland International Inc did not do particularly well in the quarter, but industry observers believe that Borland will be helped by new products that are under development. Aldus Corp and Lotus Development Corp will report respectable results. Computer Associates' results are mixed.
