Chiefs of IBM, Microsoft Corp. plan to meet
Article Abstract:
New IBM CEO Louis V. Gerstner Jr. will meet with Microsoft Chmn and CEO William H. Gates in May 1993 to discuss a strengthening of ties between the two companies. The meeting will take place among growing signs for a reconciliation between the two firms, which were close allies in the early days of personal computing but have been at odds for over a year now. The differences mainly stem from Microsoft's decision to abandon the OS/2 operating system, co-developed with IBM, in favor of the popular Microsoft Windows and forthcoming Windows NT. Chances for a rapprochement were boosted by the arrival of computer novice Gerstner, who has never met Gates, and the departure of his predecessor, John Akers, who viewed Microsoft as an arch-rival. For his part, Gates is downplaying the significance of the meeting but has indicated a willingness to work with IBM on some issues.
