Microsoft's plan to acquire Intuit sparks closer antitrust scrutiny; justice agency seeks data from America Online, Lotus and other firms
Article Abstract:
The US Justice Dept has expanded its investigation of possible Microsoft anticompetitive practices in the computer industry in light of the software giant's proposed $1.5 billion acquisition of financial software vendor Intuit Inc. Investigators have issued subpoenas to Lotus and America Online officials to examine how Microsoft's purchase of Intuit will affect the electronic commerce market. Sources report that the subpoenas are atypically broad and are designed to further the agency's goals to acquire as much information as possible about competition and emerging opportunities in the online and financial services sectors which Microsoft seeks to enter. The Justice Dept's strategy is referred to as vertical foreclosure theory in antitrust circles and may involve complex legal arguments as regulatory representatives attempt to prove that Microsoft plans to dominate the online services market.
