Military ups computing power
Article Abstract:
The US Defense Department will provide its signal/image processing researchers with a 256-gigaflop computer system as part of a $1.2 billion high-performance computing modernization program. The computer, which will be installed at the US Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY, will allow researchers to process sensory data from radar, sonar, infrared, communications and visible light sensors. Techniques include synthetic aperture sonar, synthetic aperture radar, automatic target recognition space-time adapting processing and wavelet-based compression of signal and imagers.
