Xstrata, a swiss company received a $30 million grant from the Australian government for starting the vanadium mine at Windimurra. After availing the loan, the company opted to mine the metal in South Africa in view of cost benefit. In order to prevent competition from Windimurra mine, the company sold the key items of processing equipment and closed the mine.

The investigation done by government officials in Europe and North America wiped the market value of BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto by $970 million and $ 400 million respectively. Copper is a business in which the worlds top five producers control 42% of production and the top 10 control 59%.
