MiniScribe seeks Chapter 11 protection, posts $116 million loss for nine months
Article Abstract:
MiniScribe Corp, the disk drive manufacturer plagued by severe financial problems, will post a $116 million loss for the first nine months of 1989 and file for protection under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code. MiniScribe has a negative net worth as of Oct 1, 1989, of $150 million. The Chapter 11 proceedings will protect Miniscribe from creditors and plaintiffs in more than a dozen suits against the company while it plans a reorganization. The suits claim that former MiniScribe management used false financial statements to solicit investors. An investigation into the allegations revealed 'massive fraud.' After a brief suspension of trading in common shares, stock prices rose slightly, but fell back to previous levels by the close of business.
