Mitsubishi unit bets big on digital TV, to end sales of standard sets in U.S

Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America Inc will become the first large manufacturer to stop marketing tube-based television sets. Such sets have contituted the industry's standard since television's invention in the 1920s. Starting later in 1998, Mitsubishi will begin devoting its attention entirely to advanced sets, such as digital, flat-panel and projection units. Mitsubishi cites a desire to establish a leading position in digital TV, as well as declining profitability of direct-view TVs with screen sizes less than 36 inches, as reasons for the change. A marketing executive summarizes, saying poor or negative margins in direct-view TVs will no longer have to be subsidized, and the company will be free to move faster into digital TV.

Microsoft, Harman Design, produce remote control

Microsoft Corp., with assistance from Harman International Industries Inc., has designed a hand-held control device designed for electronic products. The control device is the first one from Microsoft that does not have a MS-DOS and Windows operating system. The device has a homegrown operating system. The development of the device reflects Microsoft's ability to operate in the consumer electronics industry.

Koss, finding just-in-time production didn't work, pushes inventory buildup
Article Abstract:
Milwaukee-based Koss Corp. was founded in 1953 by John Koss who invented, in 1958, the stereo headphones the firm was best known for. Attempts to diversify over the years have not panned out, nor did just-in-time manufacturing of headphones. Retailers need better delivery which the company now can do in 48 hours. But it took some realignment in the production schedule and actual machinery.
