More phone directories spring up on the Web. (Taking in the Sites) (Internet
Article Abstract:
Banyan Systems' Switchboard Web site lists telephone numbers for more than 93 million people and 11 million businesses in the US. Users can search by name to find the phone numbers of old friends, and searches can be narrowed by city or state. Banyan developed the site in an attempt to create a directory of e-mail addresses; visitors to the site are asked to register their e-mail addresses, work numbers, professional associations, and alumni information. Among the services hoping to dominate the Web yellow-page business are Yellownet and Yellow Pages Online, both of which allow searches by brand, type of business, and company; both services expect to make money by selling ads linked to the listings. Yellownet's database is licensed from American Business Information Inc, which also licenses its database to other Internet service providers. Also described are GTE's Superpages and Nynex's Nynex Interactive Yellow Pages.

Ericsson to eliminate 10,000 more jobs; new round of cuts is coming as disappointing profit is forecast
Article Abstract:
Ericsson said that it would eliminate 10,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, and projected that its 4th qtr 1998 performance would fall 15% to 20% short of its goals. The third-largest international wireless phone company, which has been cutting 10,000 other positions since 1997, blamed the latest layoffs on a declining market for its phone and public switching systems. A First Call survey of analysts had predicted Ericsson to report per-share earnings of 87 cents in 1998 and $1.05 in 1999, compared to 81 cents in 1997. Cellular-phone revenue dropped by 1.6% to 10.82 Swedish kronor ($1.35 billion) in the 3rd qtr 1998, compared to 11 billion kronor in the 3rd qtr 1997, according to Ericsson. Analysts viewed the moves as an attempt to adjust's Ericsson market position as well as a signal of stubborn weakness in its Asian and Latin American markets.
