Motivating employees with informal awards
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of companies are recognizing the value of informal rewards as employee motivators. Most informal forms of recognition, such as jackets, morale-building meetings to honor individuals, public recognition of employee performance, personal notes and new suits, tend to be nonmonetary and spontaneous. Moreover, they directly reinforce the desired behavior, are valued by the individual, are delivered personally and are immediate in use. One reason for the rising popularity of informal awards is that traditional rewards, although still considered important, are producing less desirable results in motivating employees. Another reason is that informal rewards are effective and quite attractive to employees. Guidelines for implementing an informal reward system and the reward structures at three companies are discussed.

Motivating managers with positive reinforcement
Article Abstract:
Using behavior modification techniques developed by B.F. Skinner, managers can improve performance and create a better work environment. Before implementing a behavior modification program, a company should: identify the functions which need to be controlled, develop performance standards that cover these functions, design systems for measuring job performance, and analyze performance against the standards. There should also be a management information system in place. After identifying areas where behavior modification program might be beneficial, managers should list items requiring improvement and distribute the lists, request top management to recognize employees who have performed well, and offer assistance to those who are performing below standard. 10
