Motorola moves to ease fears of safety of cellular phones by citing research
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc officials cite an unfinished study by W. Ross Adey, associate chief of the research department at JL Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA, that indicates that cellular phones do not cause health problems. Motorola is seeking to allay public fears following the filing of a lawsuit by David Reynard of St Petersburg, FL, alleging that a cellular phone caused his wife's death from brain cancer. Adey's study demonstrates that after being bombarded by radio waves in the cellular spectrum, the human cells in a petri dish show no abnormalities. Adey, however, says that it is still premature to conclude that cellular radio waves do not cause tumor formation; he still has to conduct the second part of his study that will take two years. US and European scientists say that the cellular phone industry has not done enough studies on the health risks of their products.

Motorola is seeking to counter its rivals to maintain lead in cellular telephones
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc struggles to maintain its lead in cellular telephone equipment market share. The company's stock plunges 6.6 percent to close at $52.25 on Nov 15, 1990, which is down $3.75 from the day before. Motorola's stock dipped $1.50 on Nov 14, 1990. Increased competition from Japanese companies and an economic slowdown could further frustrate Motorola; selling cellular telephones is more difficult in a cautious economic environment since people wait to purchase gadgets. Motorola currently has 30 percent of the worldwide market share for cellular telephone, which is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.
