N.V. Philips executives are optimistic on outlook for personal computer unit
Article Abstract:
NV Philips has posted a loss of $2.3 billion for 1990, which includes large restructuring costs designed to reduce the company's payroll by about 20 percent. Company executives Robert Hamersma and Leigh Robinson, who head a microcomputer unit undergoing reorganization, have announced that the company expects to post better revenues for 1991 and also plans to manufacture its own notebook computer in Taiwan by 1992. The company has been caught with a large inventory of obsolete computers, and only commands a meager two percent of the European microcomputer market. The executives said that the company expects to sell 400,000 microcomputers in 1991, 60 percent in Europe and 40 percent in North America.

Digital Equipment says it will buy computer line from Holland's Philips
Article Abstract:
Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) will buy Philips Electronics's computer business, which reported a revenue of about $1 billion in 1990. This is a further move by DEC, which already has a presence in Europe, into the European market. According to Barry F. Willman, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, Europe will be 'a key battlefield for the 1990s,' as Japanese and American companies maneuver for advantage there. A spokesman for DEC says details of the agreement are not yet worked out. Inside sources believe that the price will be about $300 million, and the deal is expected to be completed in Oct 1991.
