Net results; Internet calling isn't high-quality; nor is it convenient; but it is cheap
Article Abstract:
The use of the Internet for making telephone calls has been exploding since the emergence of the technology in early 1995. The technology allows users to make long-distance phone calls all over the world without paying anything but the fees of a monthly Internet access provider. The quality of the phone calls is somewhat limited; users must pause each time they speak to allow the other person to reply, and the calls are frequently plagued by static. The computer of the person receiving the call must be turned on before the call is placed or a connection will not be achieved. There is currently no directory for Internet phone numbers and, frequently, both the caller and recipient must use the same software. However, the potential for this market is alarming traditional long-distance service providers and they are asking the FCC to regulate phone calls over the Internet.

Success at IBM gives Thoman edge at Xerox
Article Abstract:
G. Richard Thoman has accepted the position of Pres and COO of Xerox, with the possibility of taking over for Paul A. Allaire, the company's CEO and chmn, when he retires. Thoman had been the CFO at IBM and is one of Louis V. Gerstner Jr's, IBM's chmn and CEO, longtime friend and colleges. Xerox was influenced by the fact that Thoman worked for IBM, a technology-based company. Xerox is having to deal with competition from smaller companies, similar to IBM. Xerox is also dealing with a transition from traditional copiers, to those that use computerized, digital technology. The company is changing its distribution practices as well, moving away from just large clientele base, to include start-up companies, small dealers and home users.
