New battleground: U.S. computer firms, extending PC wars, charge into Japan; Americans such as Compaq slash prices, swap ideas, with NEC a chief target; fighting an image problem
Article Abstract:
US microcomputer makers, bitter rivals at home, are collaborating in Japan to help each other crack the market there. Compaq, Dell Computer Corp, IBM and Sun Microsystems Inc are among the firms importing the price-cutting and marketing blitzes familiar to the US market. Currently, NEC Corp dominates the Japanese market with a 53 percent share. Analysts expect Japanese to purchase 200,000 IBM PC compatibles in 1993, or about 10 percent of the $10 billion Japanese microcomputer market. Sales of PC clones will grow even faster in coming years. The invasion comes at a bad time for NEC, which is expected to report a $360 million pretax loss for FY 1993, ending Mar 31. NEC's microcomputers sell for much more than PC clones. NEC enjoys a huge distribution network, loyal customers and a widely accepted operating system. Compaq has been the most aggressive US challenger to NEC's hegemony.

Ousted chief of Compaq plans to consult
Article Abstract:
Compaq founder, ex-chairman and ex-CEO Joseph R. Canion forms Insource Management Group, a Houston, TX-based consulting company that will offer management consulting, systems integration and technology advice. Canion was forced to resign from his position at Compaq in Oct 1991 after Compaq suffered its first quarterly losses and layoffs. James Harris, a Compaq co-founder who voluntarily left the company when Canion was fired, is also a co-founding Insource. Both Canion and Harris have invested $500,000 in the new company. Ex-Electronic Data Systems Corp and Perot Systems Corp executive Ronald L. Fischer has been named Insource's president and CEO. Computer users are disoriented by the number of products and the rate of technological change, according to Canion. Insource will provide a complete consulting package on buying and networking computers as well as managing a business.

Compaq remains unable to meet demand for new ProLinea line
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp has not been able to catch up with demand for its low-cost ProLinea microcomputers. Compaq had intended to catch up with its backlog by Sep 1992, but the company now says another month will be required. Backlog problems have disrupted Compaq's plans to sell through computer retail stores and to cut prices even further. Compaq Pres Eckhard Pfeiffer says his company is making progress in eliminating shortages of components, which have been a cause of Compaq's delays. Dealers are frustrated by the delays. One dealer says Compaq underestimated the success of its product.
