New developments in business forecasting: a simple view of top-down versus bottom-up forecasting
Article Abstract:
Bottom-up and top-down forecasting have different merits and some prefer one over the other in business forecasting. These techniques take into considerations multiple dimensions including time, operations, geography and business units. Top-down forecasting is preferred in some cases but companies should employ a hybrid approach starting with lower level forecasting and then making adjustments for middle and upper levels.

New developments in business forecasting: forecast demand or shipments?
Article Abstract:
Historical shipments or sales are not real indicators of historical customer demand and there are two major approaches of correcting such situations. The first approach is to attempt to capture data that more closely reflects true demand, including lost sales by keeping track of orders, and date of order instead of shipment date. The second method is to adjust shipment and sales data prior to using it to forecast.
