News Corp.'s Peter Roth steps down as top Fox Entertainment programmer

News Corp.'s president Peter Chernin asked for the resignation of Peter Roth who says he plans to return to television production. Roth enjoyed two years of success in the programming post at Fox, but ratings for the network have stalled recently. The news echoes similarly for all television networks this season.

CBS, CNN resume their discussions on possible pooling of news operations

CBS Corp. and the Cable News Network (CNN) are studying the possibility of combining some of their news-gathering operations. Talks between the two companies were restarted in August 1998. They originally began in 1997. The negotiations are said to be in a preliminary stage and are intended to find ways in which CBS and CNN can share their costs. Both firms have also denied rumours of a possible CBS-CNN merger.
