Nibbling at the edges; hundreds of small companies now offer long-distance services - and they're taking some business away from the Big Three

ATS Network Communications Inc is one of several long-distance telephone companies looking to take business away from telecommunications giants MCI, AT&T and Sprint. ATS began its business in Feb 1993 with only three employees and one piece of switching equipment. Today, the company's revenue is expanding at about 300% per year as it grabs hundreds of long-distance customers away from industry giants. AT&T, MCI and Sprint currently hold 89% of the US long-distance market. The remaining 11% is controlled by as many as 1,000 small long-distance companies. Such companies keep expenses low by owning little equipment, passing the savings on to their customers through low rates. However, only a very few achieve the $100 million annual revenue mark before being acquired by a larger company. ATS is a prime example of the few that do survive and even manage to thrive.

Competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC) have failed to make significant inroads into local telecommunications markets, so far controlling only about 1% of about 180 million local lines in the US. Even so, some pioneering customers are making the change, signing up with CLECs such as Nextlink Communications Inc, Bellvue, WA; McLeod-USA Inc, Cedar rapids, IA; ICG Communications Inc, Englewood, CO; Intermedia Communications Inc, New York; and USN Communications Inc, Chicago. Comments from four satisfied customers are provided. The customers are Spokane County, Spokane, WA; Methodist Health Systems, Memphis, TN; E Center, West Valley City, UT; and John Byrne Co, Chicago.
