Nokia, expecting the Asia-Pacific region and China to be the mobile phone usage leaders by 2001, introduced its newest mobile phone line in Beijing. The Nokia 6110's Australian debut will come in early 1998. The line uses infrared technology that allows interaction with other devices and purportedly provides long battery life and clearer audio. A 'profiles' feature allows users to screen calls.

Australia's Primus Telecommunications is capitalizing on the emerging trend for companies to outsource communication services. Businesses generate about 80% of Primus' revenue, and the firm's 1997 profits almost doubled, reaching A$41 million. Primus is investing in global fibre optic cable to create a worldwide network, and will soon provide retail and wholesale Internet services.
