Office automation: selecting the right communications system
Article Abstract:
To provide resource sharing opportunities in connection with automated offices, electronic data processing managers can choose from hardware configurations with switches, multi-user microcomputers, terminal emulation and (or) distributed processing. Each of these alternatives is discussed, as are the various alternatives for effecting distributed processing (by use of PBXs, local area networks, wide area networks and bus architectures). The advantages and disadvantages to remote processing configurations when compared to distributed processing are identified. Technological innovations that are emerging in the area of computer networks are also briefly discussed, including laptop computers with cellular modems, fiber optics, modems with higher transmission speeds, and improved mainframe to microcomputer links.

Computers and accounting: true local area network accounting? Read between the lines
Article Abstract:
Today, even small companies can afford feature-rich accounting computer software (such as local area network software) that can be used with microcomputers. Almost any company can have multiple access to a central accounting databases. Before buying a micro-based accounting software package, it should be evaluated by making certain the product is a true multi-user system (with true record- and file-locking controls) and that it will not update files until a register has been printed and verified. The ideal accounting software package should also offer a selection of basic report layouts (so that special reports can be generated), should be cost-effective, should be easy to install and use, and should be able to grow with the company.

Making effective use of off-line data processing
Article Abstract:
To ensure the integrity of data maintained on a corporation's mainframe computer, establishment of peripheral computer systems that can access data from the mainframe but are incapable of entering data onto the mainframe is shown to be more efficient and less expensive than implementation of various written control measures that would allow users to access and enter data directly on the mainframe system. Data contained on the peripheral system that has been reconciled to control totals on the mainframe system could then be entered onto the mainframe during the monthly updating of the mainframe system. Such a peripheral system for the maintenance of cash flow accounts, accounts receivable and monthly sales is described in detail.
