On a Nest Egg Roll
Article Abstract:
After years of conservatism, pension fund managers are beginning to follow increasingly aggressive investment strategies. The so-called Prudent Man Rule of 1974, however, is keeping fund managers from being too aggressive through civil penalties for breaking their fiduciary responsibilities. The conservative strategy of bond immunization or portfolio dedication continues to be popular. But several innovations have been made in this strategy, such as contingent immunization or risk-control. New types of investment strategies have also been developed, such as self-investment, patient investment, and impatient investment.

Yawning GAAP: Why Interest in Inflation Accounting Is Flagging
Article Abstract:
Although the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) requires companies to take inflation into account in their financial statements, doing so is a complicated matter. Companies that have done so on an experimental basis have found themselves with much smaller profits or much bigger losses. Most companies keep their dividends level with inflation, but their operating income may lag. Inflation-accounting is made difficult by the nature of the indicators it relies upon. These indicators are constant cost, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and the current cost of goods.

Off the Boards
Article Abstract:
The over-the-counter (OTC) stock market has gradually caught up to and surpassed the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The OTC market has surpassed the NYSE not only in number of issues traded, but also in trading volume. The OTC market features cheaper membership fees, and its large number of so-called market makers make it a high-quality market. In addition, the liquidity of the OTC market is equivalent to that of an exchange. The National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) has been largely responsible for the OTC market's growth.
