Microsoft plans to cut back Web services
Article Abstract:
Microsoft announced that Microsoft Network will discontinue production of its on-line entertainment programming. The cutbacks will halt Microsoft Network's remaining on-line 'shows' and close World Wide Web sites pertaining to movie and music reviews. Eliminated titles include 'Forever Cool,' 'Watercooler,' 'One Click Away' and the 'Get Working' joint production with Hearst Corp. Microsoft Network will cease production of new shows at the end of Mar 1998 but will continue to make old episodes available for several months. Microsoft's Interactive Media Group will cut 50 positions. Previous Microsoft moves consist of layoffs at its Sidewalk local activity guides and elimination of the Mungo Park on-line travel magazine. The company said it is strengthening other services such as free electronic mail, search and directories to other Web content. Yahoo! and America Online already have deployed such a strategy.

Banking on the future ... again; are consumers finally ready to embrace on-line banking?
Article Abstract:
Banking industry officials assert that consumers have gained enough technological savvy from their use with their PCs, the Internet and popular financial software to comfortably embrace online banking. Banks are increasingly joining with financial software vendors to provide banking customers with complete account access via the Internet. However, for electronic banking services to extend their reach dramatically, users suggest that the fees associated with such services must drop substantially. Consumers are also generally concerned about the vulnerability of their accounts to external forces, and banks that offer complete fraud protection are more likely to attract willing customers. Banks must further provide innovative services to home bankers in order to draw them into online banking.
