Silicon Graphics shares fall on outlook
Article Abstract:
A Silicon Graphics report that its 1st qtr financial results will not meet analysts' expectations has resulted in a decline in the price of the company's stock. Silicon Graphics shares dropped to $22.125 on the news, a loss of $1.375. The company blames the disappointing results on a recall of defective chips and a transition to a new product line. Many customers have delayed their purchases in anticipation of the new products, which will be introduced in Oct 1996. The resulting drop in sales has created an oversupply of its current products. Silicon Graphics blames the recall on NEC Corp, the leading supplier of the MIPS R10,000 processors used in many of its products. A flaw in NEC's chips causes some computers to crash and Silicon Graphics is recalling around 3,900 systems that contain the chip. This is the fifth consecutive quarter in which Silicon Graphics' results have not met expectations.
