Netscape earnings exceed expectations as sales increase 50% in third quarter
Article Abstract:
Netscape announced net income of $11.7 million, or 13 cents a share, for the 3rd qtr 1997. The report exceeded analysts' expectations by a penny a share. Profit for the 3rd qtr 1996 totaled $7.7 million, or 9 cents a share. Sales leaped 50% in the 3rd qtr 1997 to $150 million, compared with 3rd qtr 1996's $100 million, despite Microsoft's massive Internet-related marketing effort. Analysts interpreted the results as a signal that Netscape would have the resources to compete with Microsoft for Internet and intranet software. Netscape not only has established an Internet presence, it also is benefiting from alliances with Microsoft opponents that include Sun Microsystems and IBM, according to analysts. Netscape also is diversifying beyond its Internet browser and server software origin. Netscape's service revenues, which are surging at triple digit rates, now total about 30% of the company's total sales.
