Organization structure and corporate social performance: a field study in two contrasting industries
Article Abstract:
The relationship between public-affairs management structure and social performance was studied. We explored three dimensions of public-affairs management structure - receptivity to public affairs information, integration of public affairs information, and internal influence of public affairs - in two contrasting industries, insurance and forest products. Balanced strength along each of the three dimensions of public affairs management was found to be associated with high social performance in both industries. The pattern was more consistent for companies at the extremes of social performance ratings than it was for middle-ranked companies. In addition, differences in the institutional environments of the two industries were associated with differences in the various components of public affairs structure. Effects of feedback on the self-confidence of women
Article Abstract:
The relationship between low self-confidence in women and job feedback in a work environment was studied. The research tested the following hypotheses: before starting an unfamiliar job, women have lower self-confidence than men, when no performance evaluations are given, women will have lower self-confidence than men, and when performance evaluations are given, men and women will not differ in their self-confidence levels, even if the evaluations are negative. The results supported the hypothesis that women have lower self-confidence than men when starting a new job or when no feedback is given, but did not support the hypothesis that men and women have the same self-confidence levels when feedback is given, since women reported lower levels of self-confidence in this situation.
