PC sales fell as Windows 98 was awaited
Article Abstract:
According to a survey by ZD Market Intelligence, retail sales of PCs in May 1998 grew only by 0.7% compared with the yearly increase of 35% for the preceding four-month period. The slowdown has resulted in an 18.7% drop in revenue for computer manufacturers, who are already in a tight profit squeeze caused by the introduction of sub-$1000 PCs. The slump is attributed to consumers waiting for the introduction of Microsoft's Windows 98 OS. Early indications are that Windows 98 sales are strong. US stores sold approximately 277,000 copies of the software during the first 24 hours after the OS went on sale on Jun 25, 1998. Analysts expect PC sales to rebound in Jul 1998 when vendors are expected to release their new models with Windows 98 OS to capture the back-to-school market.

PC makers push ahead on Windows 98; antitrust lawsuit spurs a debate on Internet, doubts by economists
Article Abstract:
PC manufacturers and retailers do not plan to alter their introduction of Microsoft's Windows 98 despite antitrust suits filed against Microsoft. PC makers Compaq, Dell Computer and Gateway 2000 said they will debut their Windows 98-equipped PCs on Jun 25, 1998. Computer retailer CompUSA also is keeping the same schedule, but PC maker IBM refused to comment. Many companies that contract with Microsoft are hesitating to criticize the company, while Symantec and other Microsoft allies attacked the lawsuits for curtailing innovation. Corporate customers probably will not feel the effects, as most view Windows 98 as an interim product, according to PC reseller CompuCom Systems. Most businesses instead are anticipating Microsoft's Windows 5.0 to impact the corporate market.
