Coming digital age may transform your living room in many ways
Article Abstract:
The growth of digital communications may change the way consumers live if the use of such equipment become less expensive. Companies such as Apple and Microsoft Corp are believed to be allying themselves with Sony Corp's rival Matsushita Electronics Works Ltd in an attempt to adapt their operating systems to consumer electronics equipment. GTE Corp is conducting a test which pipes in digital services such as videophones, cable television and home shopping to families. While some utilities such as the automatic movie menu come in handy, others such as the home shopping service have yet to reach the level of user-friendliness desired. The services are delivered to homes using fiber-optic cables, which are extremely expensive. A nationwide fiber-optic network is estimated to cost between $100 billion and $1 trillion.

IBM-Apple operating system, Taligent, is ahead of schedule
Article Abstract:
Taligent Inc predicts delivery of the next-generation operating system on which it is working in 1994. When IBM and Apple formed the joint venture in mid-1992, officials predicted a 1995 rollout date for the product. Taligent's operating system uses a new approach, called object-oriented programming, in which software is made up of pre-designed objects, or modules. In contrast to today's operating systems, the forthcoming operating system, code-named 'Pink,' will be able to run a wide variety of applications. Apple and IBM have promised that Pink will run both Apple Macintosh and OS/2 applications. Some leading software firms, including Novell Inc and WordPerfect Corp, have agreed to develop programs for Pink.
