Pacific Telesis to spend $1 billion on its California phone network
Article Abstract:
Pacific Bell, the Pacific Telesis Group's California unit, will spend $1 billion from 1993-1997 to replace its remaining analog switches with digital technology. The move will make Pacific Bell's telephone equipment, currently one of the most dated, the most advanced by the end of 1997, and will enable the company to save money over a ten-year period. With digital technology, Pacific Bell can offer custom calling services such as Call Trace and Call Return, as well as videoconferencing and telecommuting services. The new technology also means that the company will be using only two types of switching systems for providing service and maintenance, instead of the seven different systems currently in use. AT&T will provide 5ESS switching systems for 5.1 million lines while Northern Telecom will supply DMS 100 switching systems serving four million lines.

BellSouth to drop 8,000 employees; more cuts at phone firms are likely
Article Abstract:
BellSouth Corp announces plans to cut its telephone operations' work force by 8,000, or 9.6 percent, by 1996. BellSouth also plans to merge its corporate work force with the headquarters staff of its BellSouth Enterprises subsidiary, which oversees BellSouth's telephone directory, overseas and cellular businesses. About 650 workers will be cut or reassigned from the combined total of 1,150 for the two staffs. Other Bell regional telephone companies are expected to announce job cuts as competition increases from new, low-cost technologies. BellSouth currently employs 96,975, of whom 83,000 are in telecommunications. The company employs 44.7 workers per 10,000 customer telephone lines, compared to Bell Atlantic's 35 workers per 10,000 lines.
