Merger and acquisition activities are expected to continue in the packaging and container industry in 1998 along with the continued integration of manufacturing capabilities. There is greater demand for glass containers and margins are being strengthened by innovation and new equipment. However, profit margins can be affected by raw materials prices. Several of these stocks are expected to outperform the market in 1998 and through 2000-2002, although others are only average.

The packaging and container industry is highly competitive and companies are likely to reduce costs in 1998 in order to maintain high earnings. Demand for containers and consolidation are also key factors for the industry as well, and there are avenues for growth in Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe. Several of these stocks are expected to outperform the market in 1998 and beyond, but most are not timely for investors.
