Paper warfare erupts out west
Article Abstract:
Australia's News Ltd. is attempting to gain a larger share of the Perth newspaper market by increasing the advertising competition and limiting the cashflow of rival West Australian Newspaper Holdings (WAN). WAN's share price has fallen to $5.60 from a high of $6.50 in 1998. To weaken WAN, News Ltd. has purchased a 50.1% stake in Kerry Stokes' Community Newspaper group; the other shareholder is WAN. Also, News Ltd. has discounted advertising and increased the costs of its own editorial services sold to WAN.
