Perceptual and archival measures of Miles and Snow's strategic types: a comprehensive assessment of reliability and validity
Article Abstract:
Despite the widespread research use of Miles and Snow's typology of strategic orientations, there have been no systematic attempts to assess the reliability and validity of its various measures. The present works provides such an assessment using data collected at two points from over 400 organizations in the hospital industry. We examined dimensions of the typology using both perceptual self-typing and archival data from multiple sources. The results generally support predictions across a variety of measure. Implications for further testing and research are discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Structural and perceptual influences on intraindustry stratification
Article Abstract:
Survey data taken from 114 questionnaires completed by the larger firms in the financial service industries indicate that: (1) corporate structures and managers' perceptions of the economic and competitive environment determine the degree of intra-industry stratification; and (2) strategic group concepts do apply in corporate and other collective settings. In fact, managers' and executives' perceptions can be used to predict intra-industry stratification. These predictions are, however, dependent upon the degree of strategy and the levels of planning for their forecasting accuracy.

The symbolic management of strategic change: Sensegiving via framing and decoupling
Article Abstract:
A symbolic management perspective on strategic change to predict and test the antecedents and consequences of the way in which firms frame strategic change is described. It is observed that firms implementing practices that commensurate with a shareholder value approach are more likely to use a balancing framing than an acquiescence framing.
