Performance measurement: implementing strategy
Article Abstract:
Integration planning for performance measures implements strategic thinking in the managerial decision making process. Integration planning sharpens performance measures and identifies what must be controlled. Performance measures must provide feedback to management so that management can control daily operations, and must include result measurements that allow the mensuration of the achievement of goals. Examples of performance measures include machine process capability, first-time quality, and schedule consistency. Performance measurement stimulates continuous improvement by giving employees knowledge about how their actions contribute to the realization of goals, acts as a catalyst for change, and fosters teamwork by linking operations and by focusing on end results for the organization.

The dangerous morality of managing earnings
Article Abstract:
A survey of 649 general, financial, control, and audit mangers was conducted to ascertain their opinions about the ethics of managing short-term earnings. The results of the survey indicate that there was no general consensus about the morality of management practices. Most managers used questionable techniques when managing short-term earnings, but the majority believed that there was nothing wrong with their practices. Survey results reveal that managers believe that reducing earnings was more acceptable than increasing earnings and that short-term earnings management was more acceptable if the earnings effect was small.
